Privacy Policy
1. Summary
FretTutor is a guitar companion that runs on your iPhone. It is built so that your practice stays yours:
- We collect no data. No account, no sign-up, no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers.
- Nothing you play, record, or import ever reaches GJIRA Enterprises Ltd. We operate no servers that receive anything from the app.
- All audio analysis — chord recognition, note grading, song analysis, tempo detection — happens entirely on your iPhone.
One optional feature — downloading an alternative AI recognition model — can connect to the internet, and only if you explicitly turn it on. It is described in full in section 3. Everything else in the app works with no network connection at all.
2. What the app accesses on your iPhone, and why
FretTutor asks iOS for access to the following, always with a system permission prompt you can decline. Every one of these is processed on the device and goes nowhere else.
| Access | What it is used for | Where the data lives |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Listening while you practise — in Play-Along and in daily exercises — to check the chords and notes you play in real time. This audio is analysed in memory and is not written to disk. The Listen feature can also make a recording of your playing for analysis. | Live grading audio: discarded as it is analysed. Listen recordings: temporary files on your iPhone that you control and can delete. |
| Camera (with microphone) | Recording a practice take in the Shots feature. | Videos are saved on this iPhone only and are never uploaded. |
| Music library | Reading a song you choose from your own Music library so the app can work out its key, chords, tempo and structure. FretTutor never modifies your library. | Analysis runs on the device; results are stored on the device. |
| Files you import | The Analyze tab accepts audio files you place into FretTutor from the Files app. They are analysed on the device. | On your iPhone, in the app's folder, visible and deletable in the Files app. |
| Practice data | Your progress, exercise scores, awards, and saved songs. | On your iPhone only. Deleting the app deletes them. |
FretTutor does not request access to your photo library, contacts, location, calendar, or anything else not listed above.
3. The one optional network feature: AI model downloads
FretTutor's built-in recognition engine needs no models, no downloads and no internet. In Settings ▸ Recognition Engine ▸ AI Models you may optionally download an alternative on-device recognition model. This is the only part of the app that can use the network, and it is off until you enable it:
- It does nothing until you explicitly consent to network requests via a switch in that screen, and add your own Hugging Face access token.
- Your token is your own credential. It is stored only in your iPhone's Keychain and is sent only to huggingface.co as an authorization header. GJIRA Enterprises Ltd never receives it.
- A download reveals to Hugging Face your IP address and which model you requested — nothing else. None of your audio, recordings, practice data or personal information is included, ever.
- Downloads are governed by Hugging Face's own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Your Hugging Face account is between you and them.
- Once downloaded, the model runs entirely on your iPhone, like everything else. You can withdraw consent at any time with the same switch, and remove your token at any time.
4. What never happens
- No transmission to us. Your audio, recordings, videos, imported songs and practice data never leave your iPhone for any GJIRA system — we have none to receive them.
- No third parties. The app embeds no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, no crash reporters, and no social plug-ins.
- No tracking. No identifiers are collected or shared for tracking, and the app shows no ads.
- No selling of data. We hold no data about you, so there is nothing to sell, share, or profile.
5. Children
FretTutor collects no data from anyone — including children. Because there are no accounts, no data collection and no third-party services, no personal information about a child (or anyone else) is ever gathered or processed by us.
6. Your data and your rights
Everything FretTutor touches is on your iPhone and under your direct control. Delete a recording, video or saved song in the app or via the Files app; delete the app to remove everything. There is nothing held by GJIRA Enterprises Ltd to access, correct, export or erase.
Canada (PIPEDA / BC PIPA): we collect no personal information.
California (CCPA/CPRA): we do not collect, sell, or share personal information, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
UK/EU (GDPR): we carry out no processing of your personal data — it never reaches us. The optional model download in section 3 sends your token, at your instruction, to a provider you chose; that processing is between you and Hugging Face.
7. Security
On-device data is protected by iOS sandboxing and your device passcode/Face ID as configured by you. If you use the optional model download, your Hugging Face token is stored in the iOS Keychain and transmitted only over TLS to huggingface.co.
8. Changes to this policy
If FretTutor ever gains a feature that changes what leaves your device, this policy will be updated before that feature ships, with the effective date above revised, and the app will disclose the change before the feature is used. The current version of this policy is always at gjiraenterprises.com/frettutor/privacy.
9. Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.
